Phenomenal. I haven't seen it yet, but I've seen the same phenomenon with other movies as well. Could it also be that we're believing our own hype about the world, that humanity is only capable of destroying the world we live in? The problem is also victim mentality - that I'm the victim and powerless to do anything about it, which is ridiculous, but it's easier to believe that then to actually go do something. I sometimes wonder though, how easy is it - really - to "just get out"? That does tend to cost money, take time we don't have because we're trying to make the money, etc. etc. etc. ...

Fantastic thoughts Alex! I loved the film and the image of a man immersing himself into the Na'vi culture and becoming a part of the tribe and community, eventually leading him to fight against those who sought to steal, kill, and ultimately destroy them. It left me feeling hopeful.

while i am one of the remaining few who haven't yet braved the line-ups for Avatar (in 3D or 3D IMAX!), i did just finish watching the movie Moon last night. provocative and well filmed, it presents a character who knows the truth of a world that is more contrived than real, and his resolve to engage the real world in all of its risk and uncertainty (and no, it wasn't just a remake of The Matrix).

Tim, thanks for letting me ask the question. Your answers are great and offer a starting point for your earlier questions.

So, you are wondering if a traditional, independent congregation can explore the headings you've set out, which are the basics for embracing the things I mentioned in my article.

You may have a particular congregation or two in mind, but you set me thinking about what these big issues might look like in the kind of church you have mentioned. These five things might look like:

Connection to the church and its doctrines
An understanding of mission involving a few, but not "me"
Emphasis on traditional ways and means that tend to externalise faith
Community is an add on - "we" emerges out of "I" for people
The world is somewhere we escape from to do sacred things

I have rushed these, but you get the idea. The question is: How do we lead people from what I've scribbled down in my list to the things you mention in yours?

Are you happy to continue the conversation?

Ha! Great question Geoffrey. I should be clear and say that I've only just begun my journey into culture pubs and church planting so I don't know that I'm the right guy to ask this question of or offer much help to others on this topic. That being said what comes to mind for me is:

Connection to Jesus
An understanding of how we're to be involved in His mission
A map for journey through discipleship
A radical commitment to community
A heart for serving the world

Under those broad and generic headings many other things fit but that's where my mind is at these days. If I need to add some explanation of those things I'm more than willing to do so and I freely admit the list might be incomplete but hopefully that's enough to get to where you were hoping the conversation would go :-)

Greg, Wow. I am so rarely accused of overestimating “Christendom”. I want to bask in that for a moment. Ok there. Thanks. :)

Now, as you know, I’m not an advocate of Christianity or Christendom, but of Jesus and following him. And, I know that cultural Christianity is a definite issue where you’re at…actually, where we’re all at. But here’s a question for you, Why do you think that recycling is the top priority on God’s mind for the residents of your part of the world?

Also, Why does spiritual imagination begin with a deep introspective look, as opposed to beginning wherever it wants?
After all, that’s what imaginations are good at.

God has already given us imagination, humble or not. In fact, without it we could never even begin to imagine Psalm 14.

Best…

Joe, I am very much with you in your hopes and dreams for this undiscovered country.

What you share about servant leadership is so vital. I came across an explanation of the Oriental bow. I hadn't realised that when it is true that it has three elements to it: 1) hold, 2) feel, 3) give. The bow is not ended until the person it is being offered to stops bowing. This is such a picture of servant leadership and I have we share our talents and abilties into the lives of others, as servants, not conquerors.
